Have you ever rinsed your apple and thought, "Hmmβ¦ should I use dish soap to clean this?" πββοΈ
I used to wonder the same thing! So today I want to share my honest experience and what I've learned after diving into this weird-but-important topic: Can we wash fruits with dish soap? Let's get into it π
Yup, I admit it! A few years ago, when I saw waxy apples or dusty grapes, I thought, "Why not just use a few drops of dish soap? I mean, it works on dirty plates, right?" But then I realized β our bodies aren't dishes, and there's a big difference between rinsing a bowl and rinsing a strawberry π
The short answer: No, not really.
Dishwashing liquid is made for greasy pans and kitchen sinks. Even though it's powerful, it's not designed for food surfaces. It can leave behind residues that aren't meant to be eaten β even after rinsing a few times. Some dish soaps contain fragrances, preservatives, or surfactants that may irritate your stomach or skin. Yikes π¬
These days, I follow a much simpler (and safer!) fruit-washing routine:
1. Soak fruits in clean water for 1β2 minutes.
2. Add a splash of white vinegar if I want extra cleaning power (especially for grapes or strawberries).
3. Use a soft veggie brush for apples, pears, or anything with a firm skin.
4. Rinse under running water, and I'm done!
That's it. No weird chemicals, no artificial stuff. Just water, maybe a little vinegar, and some light scrubbing.
Some fruits like apples are coated with wax to stay fresh longer. It's totally okay to want to remove it β but dish soap still isn't the answer. Instead, you can:
β’ Soak the fruit in warm water with baking soda.
β’ Gently rub with a clean cloth or sponge.
β’ Dry before storing.
It works, and you'll feel way better knowing your fruit is clean and chemical-free π§Όβ‘οΈπ
So no, I wouldn't recommend washing your fruit with dish soap anymore. I've learned it's just not worth the risk β and there are way better (and easier) ways to clean fruit that don't involve stuff made for greasy pans.
Do you wash your fruits with just water, or do you have your own DIY method? I'd love to hear how you clean your apples, berries, or even avocados! Drop your tips or questions in the comments β I read them all! ππ
Let's keep our snacks fresh, clean, and safe β without any soapy surprises π§Όπ«π
